Womens Road Race Report

The wee village of Munlochy on the Black Isle saw one of the biggest fields for a women’s race in Scotland this year. The field was made up of experienced riders and some first timers, from juniors to vet category – it was a beautiful thing. 40 riders took to the start line, just outside the hall and you could feel the buzz building. The peleton stayed together for a lap of this rolly course and it was at the beginning of the second lap, climbing up through Munlochy, that splits began to form. This lap saw the first Queen of the Mountains hill prime, taken by one of the race favourites, Gabriella Nordin of Pedal Power. There was an unfortunate touch of wheels and a couple of riders came down just before the QOM, thankfully Sarah Barry (Glasgow Wheelers) is doing okay. The bunch stayed together at about 20 riders with a few digs coming up through Munlochy, as expected. The 4th lap saw the second QOM prime and this time it was another race favourite in Edinburgh RC’s Peigi Series with Gabriella second. This gave them a tie! Evgenia Ilyinskaya of Edinburgh RC saw her chance when everyone eased off after the prime and made a strong attack. Deeside Thistle and Moray Firth CC quickly sent riders to the front to chase her down. She held off for some time but the long downhill back to Munlochy gave the chasing bunch the advantage and she was reeled in just before the climb started again. A few more attacks came but nothing stuck and the bunch, now 17...

May weekend results roundup

The May Day weekend was a busy one for MFCC with races taking place all over the country. As usual, there is a lot of success to write about: First up was race #1 of the Aberdeen Evening Series on Thursday. Predicatbly, Kenny Riddle was in the right place at the right time and got himself in the winning break. In the end, he was beaten into 2nd place by the width of a tyre from Granite City’s Dave Anderson. Brian Widdison also scores a top10 finish from the sprint in the chasing bunch. Full results are here.   Over the weekend, Callum Finlayson decided to try out each step of the podium to see which was his favourite with a 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the 3 races of the Forres Weekend. The 2nd place was from the 10 mile TT on Saturday with a time of 22:25, just 24 seconds behind winner Gavin Shirey (Dooleys Cycles).  David Smith (MFCC) riding his 2nd TT put in a great time of 23:01 to get 6th place. The 25 mile TT on Sunday morning was the top step for Callum, finishing in 56:28 at an average speed over the 25 miles of 26.5mph!  Then went on to finish 3rd in the afternoon’s hilly TT. Anne Murray put in consistently fast times all weekend and was 1st Female across all 3 events. Full results for the 3 forres TTs: 10TT, 25TT, hilly TT MFCC also had a lot of representation in the 1st Loch Ness Etape with lots of great times. From the 1081 finishers, there were 7 MFCC riders in...

Successful weekend for MFCC

There were lots of MFCC racers in action this weekend riding Road Races, Time Trials and MTB. Wins came from Anne Murray racing SXC Round2 at Cathkin Braes and Fraser MacBeath in the Dunfermline Road Race. Adding to the points from Anne’s win was a 2nd place for Gregor Grant and 7th for Brian Nicholas. MFCC was sitting 9th out of 44 teams after round 1 (Forfar) on the Scottish Cross Country series leaderboard, we might climb a few places after the great results from this weekend have been added up! It’s not unusual these days to see MFCC having the largest team at a road race and this was again the case for the Dunfermline Road Race. A 7-man team, including young Thomas Deas riding his first road race, went down to represent MFCC. The race was won by Fraser MacBeath with Callum Finlayson just behind in 6th place. Full results here. Saturday’s road race obviously wasn’t hard enough for Callum Finlayson as he was back down on Sunday for the Mackie Tankard 25 mile time trial. Finishing 3rd behind Silas Goldsworthy and Alan Thomson on another windy day. A great result up against a strong field. Well done to everybody wearing a Moray Firth top this weekend!...
